Your Mini's heartbeat is the subject of our 'Home Servicing' blog this week! That's right, it's time we look at your engine... Perhaps one of the most important (and expensive!) parts of your Mini, your engine needs to be in tip-top condition to avoid any serious damage to your Mini that could be costly to repair. Consequently, engine troubles can also cause accidents on the road putting yourselves and others at risk.

Below we will advise you on the basic things to check when servicing your Mini's engine & ignition and the tools needed to carry this out.

Equipment needed :-

Oil & Filter Change

Most importantly when servicing your Mini, we would recommend changing both the oil & filter as this helps improve fuel efficiency and ensures that you keep your car running reliably.

The Mini's engine oil deteriorates in time and high mileage, due to constant heating and cooling, it gets contaminated with oxidants and minute metal particles, the viscosity deteriorates with age & mileage also which can reduces the oil pressure, which is important for lubrication and protecting the bearings and pistons etc , regular oil changes reduce the build up of sludge in the oil galleries and the gearbox ( sump ) too.

Ideally run your Mini's engine for 15 minutes to warm your oil through before you attempt to drain it as warm oil will flow easier than when it is cold.

  • Make sure you wear protective clothing and latex protective gloves to prevent getting the old contaminated oil on your skin
  • Take care handling the oil and the filter as the oil will be hot!
  • Drain the oil into a suitable container and dispose of it later at a specific disposal point – refit the sump plug with a new copper washer.
  • Remove the oil filter and dispose of it together with the old oil, apply a sliver of grease to the oil seal on the new filter, fill the filter with new oil and fit the filter, the filter only needs to be hand tight.
  • Refill the engine with new oil 20/50 mineral oil (we recommend Millers Classic 20/50)
  • Run the engine at idle speed only, to circulate the new oil around the oil galleries and engine components, check the oil level and check the sump plug and oil filter for leaks.

Fluid Levels

Key fluids in your Mini’s engine bay will need their levels checking – and topping up if they’re running low. These include:

  • Windscreen washer fluid – top up with a mix of water and screen cleaning additive
  • Engine Coolant - top up with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze/summer coolant and water
  • Carburettor dashpot oil - top up as necessary with appropriate dashpot oil
  • Brake fluid - top up using mineral based fluid, dot 3 or dot 4 – be careful not to spill fluid on paintwork as it will damage the paint
  • Clutch fluid - top up using mineral based fluid, dot 3 or dot 4 – be careful not to spill fluid on paintwork as it will damage the paint.

In short, each of these fluids plays an important role in keeping your Mini functioning the way it should, keeping you safe when out and about!

Ignition Check

  • Points & condensor (except electronic ignition and MPi) - check the condition of the contacts on the points adjust or replace as necessary using a screwdriver and feeler gauges set the contact gap at  0.016” or .4mm gap
  • Rotor arm (except MPI) - check the condition of the blade for burns or damage replace as necessary
  • Coil - check for cracks or leaks, check security of the electrical terminals
  • Distributor cap (except MPi) - check for cracks, check the internal terminals for erosion – replace as necessary
  • HT leads - check tightness in the cap and on the spark plug. Check the outer covering for cracks or damage, replace as necessary.
  • Spark plugs - check the outer body of the plug for cracks or damage, check the electrodes for erosion or burns, replace as necessary. Inspect the colour of the electrodes – this is a good indication of the fuel air mixture and condition of the piston rings and valve guides :-
  • pale or white colour - weak mixture
  • sandy colour - correct mixture
  • black colour (sooty) - rich mixture
  • black colour (wet) - very rich mixture or possibly burning oil
  • Set the plug gap at 0.025” for standard coil and points distributor
  • Set the plug gap at 0.040” for high output coils or electronic ignition

Valve Check

  • When the engine is cold, remove the valve cover and the spark plugs – turn the engine over by hand until both valves are closed on no 1 cylinder, check the valve clearance using the correct feeler gauges  (see below) adjust if necessary using a screwdriver and appropriate AF spanner
  • Repeat this procedure for all 4 cylinders
  • Replace the valve cover gasket use grease or a thin bead of silicon sealant to secure the gasket to the cover and refit the cover. Do not over tighten the screws or you will crush the cork gasket.

Valve clearances :-

  • Standard engine and camshaft - 0.012” (0.3mm)   inlet & exhaust
  • Standard SPi and MPi – 0.013”  (0.33mm)  inlet & exhaust
  • Performance cams & roller tipped rockers – 0.016” (0.4mm) inlet & exhaust

When it comes to sheer driving pleasure, nothing compares to the exhilarating handling of a classic Mini. With its go-kart-like agility and mischievous charm, this iconic car delivers a unique experience that modern vehicles can only dream of emulating.

In this comprehensive guide, we aim to help you maintain your Mini's natural handling prowess or take it to the next level. Buckle up and let's dive into the key aspects that will elevate your driving enjoyment!

Tyres: Connecting You to the Road

Tyre for classic Mini

Tyres are the must have for handling, it's the only part connecting you to the road!

The first step to optimising your Mini's handling starts with the tyres, the vital link between your car and the asphalt. Most Minis come equipped with '145' tyres, indicating their tread width. However, upgrading to '165' tyres will make a remarkable difference in handling and grip, significantly enhancing your driving experience.

Regularly checking your Mini's tyres is essential. Inspect the tread depth, ensuring it meets the legal requirement of 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre width, uniformly around the circumference. Pay attention to wear patterns as well: if the outer edges wear more, the tyres may be under-inflated, while excessive wear in the middle suggests overinflation. Uneven wear on the front or rear tyres can indicate issues with wheel alignment or excessive camber, which should be examined by a specialist.

Subframe: The Foundation of Suspension

Take a moment to inspect the front and rear subframes of your Mini, as they bear the weight of the entire suspension system. Given the Mini's low ground clearance, even a routine encounter with a speed bump can put strain on the subframes. It's crucial to check for any damage or rust that might compromise the integrity of these components, potentially affecting steering, suspension geometry, and overall safety.

If your subframe requires repair or replacement, don't fret. While the task can be daunting, especially for those unfamiliar with the process, expert Mini specialists are available to offer guidance. Alternatively, you can find fully built subframes ready for installation, or seek assistance from experienced technicians at our comprehensive garage and workshop.

Over time, the rubber mountings connecting the subframes to the chassis may wear out. Regularly examine and replace these mountings to maintain proper alignment and prevent handling issues. Choose from a range of mountings, including standard rubber for original replacement, polyurethane for improved performance, or solid types for the ultimate in handling at the expense of increased road noise.

Height: Finding the Perfect Balance

Ensuring that your Mini maintains the correct height, both side to side and front to rear, is vital for optimal handling. This measurement reflects the distance between the bottom of your Mini and the road, significantly influencing its centre of gravity, cornering ability, and braking behaviour. The original factory setting specifies 320mm from the wheel's centre to the underside of the wheel arch at the front, and 330mm at the rear.

As the weight of the engine and front seat passengers can compress the front rubber suspension cones over time, it's important to monitor and adjust the suspension height accordingly.

Easily adjust the suspension height, find the perfect setting with Adjusta Ride.

We highly recommend our Moulton Smootha Ride Kits, that transform all dry suspension Minis making a great car more comfortable and much more pleasant to drive!

Camber & Caster: Steering Towards Precision

Proper wheel alignment is crucial for precise handling. Ensure that all your wheels are pointed in the right direction, maintaining the desired camber and caster angles.Tie rods affect the caster angle of the front wheels. Over time, the standard bars can become distorted, compromising the caster alignment. Adjustable tie rods provide the necessary adjustment to maintain optimal caster alignment.

To enhance cornering ability, negative camber must be introduced, complemented by the correct caster angle. Negative camber increases the tyre's footprint on the road surface, leveraging the centrifugal force during cornering to shift the centre of gravity towards the outside wheels. Bottom arms play a key role in achieving the desired camber angle for the front wheels. Choose fixed or adjustable arms to complete the geometry setup.

Determining the ideal amount of negative camber for each wheel can be a nuanced task. If you're unsure, our Mini specialists are ready to provide expert advice tailored to your specific needs.

Tracking: Keeping Your Mini on the Right Path

Tracking, or wheel alignment, ensures that your Mini's front wheels are correctly aligned and pointing slightly outward (toe-out), while the rear wheels point inward (toe-in). Correct tracking is crucial for preserving your tyre's lifespan, as incorrect alignment can lead to accelerated and uneven tyre wear, as well as impact your Mini's overall handling.

We recommend having your tracking checked and set every 10,000 miles or as soon as you notice increased tyre wear. While tracking can be adjusted at home with tracking gauges, entrusting your Mini to our expert technicians ensures professional, precise alignment.

Shock Absorbers: Smooth Ride, Ultimate Control

Shock absorbers play a vital role in controlling your Mini's suspension movement. By absorbing the energy from bumps and rebounds, they keep your tyres firmly planted on the road, ensuring optimal contact and stability. Worn or low-quality shock absorbers compromise the ride quality, increase stopping distances, accelerate tyre wear, and make your Mini feel unpredictable and unstable.

When replacing shock absorbers, always opt for quality replacements and replace them in pairs per axle. This ensures balanced suspension performance and consistent handling.

When it comes to the performance of your car, brakes play a critical role. They not only enable you to stop or slow down your vehicle but also provide you with the ability to modulate your speed effectively. At Mini Sport Ltd, we understand the significance of reliable braking systems, which is why we offer comprehensive solutions for all your Mini's braking needs. In this article, we will explore the importance of brake servicing for your Mini and how you can service your Mini at home.

Enhanced Braking Performance:

By servicing your Mini's brakes regularly, you ensure that they operate at their best. Upgrading to disc brakes can significantly improve braking performance, especially in wet weather conditions. Disc brakes dissipate heat better and are less prone to brake fade, allowing you to maintain control and stop quickly when needed. At Mini Sport Ltd, we provide complete conversion kits that make upgrading to disc brakes easier, ensuring optimal performance and safety.

Safety First:

Your Mini's brakes are your first line of defence against potential hazards and accidents. A properly maintained braking system allows you to react swiftly to unexpected situations, avoid collisions, and protect yourself, your passengers, and  other road users. Neglecting brake servicing increases the risk of brake failure, compromising your safety and the safety of those around you. Regular brake inspections and maintenance can identify potential issues early on and prevent costly repairs or accidents.

Prevention of Brake Wear:

Brakes endure constant wear and tear due to their frequent usage. Each time you press the brake pedal, friction is generated between the brake pads and rotors, gradually wearing down the pad material. Regular brake servicing helps monitor the condition of your brake pads and replace them before they become too thin, ensuring optimal braking performance and preventing damage to the rotors. By addressing brake wear promptly, you avoid more extensive and costly repairs in the future.

Detection of Brake System Issues:

Brake servicing provides an opportunity to identify and address any underlying issues with your Mini's braking system. Low brake fluid levels can impair brake performance, so it's crucial to check the fluid regularly and top it up if needed. Additionally, worn-out brake pads or damaged rotors can lead to squealing or scraping sounds, abnormal vibrations, or a spongy brake pedal. Regular brake inspections enable early detection of these warning signs, allowing for timely repairs and preventing potential brake failure.

Peace of Mind:

Knowing that your Mini's brakes are in top condition provides peace of mind while driving. A well-maintained braking system gives you confidence in your ability to control your vehicle and respond effectively to any road situation. Whether you're navigating busy city streets or enjoying a thrilling countryside drive, the assurance of reliable brakes allows you to focus on the road ahead without unnecessary worry or stress.

Maintaining and servicing your Mini's brakes is not only essential for optimal performance but also a critical factor in ensuring your safety and the safety of others on the road. At Mini Sport, we offer a comprehensive range of brake solutions, from disc brake conversions to regular inspections and maintenance. By prioritising brake servicing and addressing any issues promptly, you can enjoy peace of mind, enhanced braking performance, and a safer driving experience in your beloved Mini. Remember, your safety is our top priority.

Classic Mini Brake Servicing: A How-To Guide

Delve into a crucial aspect of your beloved Mini: the brakes! Maintaining the stopping power of your pocket rocket is vital for ensuring your safety on the road.

Classic Minis come equipped with two distinct brake systems: Drum Brakes all around or Disc Brakes on the front.

Before you begin, it's essential to have the following items within reach:

Drive flange screws: Hand tight

Caliper bolts: 38Lb/Ft

Front hub nut (Disc Brakes): 180Lb/Ft (single split pin hole), 155Lb/Ft (twin split pin hole)

If your Mini is fitted with Disc Brakes on the front (see further down for the rear brakes):

These are the steps to follow for replacing the Brake Disc:

How to replace Drum Brakes:

For Minis with front drum brakes follow the above instructions, but be aware the front has two wheel cylinder per side and no handbrake cable to release.

Some of the components mentioned above are dependent on the year, model, or even the size of your brake system. Don't worry if you're unsure about which parts you need, though. Our dedicated team of friendly and knowledgeable experts are just a phone call away.

Dixies Challenge 2023

The adrenaline-fueled, second round of the HRCR Mini Sport Cup took place over the challenging, army training, Eypynt ranges, renowned for their blind crests, unseen bends, and large jumps. This formidable terrain promised to push every mini crew to their limits, captivating both participants and spectators alike.

Despite the initial enthusiasm of nine Mini entries, only seven cars managed to make it to the starting line in time, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition.

Leading the pack were Clive King and Anton Bird in the Mini Sport-backed Mini, car 41. Close behind, the team of Eric Davies and Russell Joseph eagerly awaited their turn, while Ken Price and Andrew O’Hanalon prepared to give it their all. The remaining cars were spread throughout the field.

Most of the crews met the night before for a meal and drinks and a good might was had by everyone. With rainfall overnight and the infrequent use of the ranges, the stage was set for a thrilling challenge, as the roads were expected to be slippery.

Clive was concerned that he would not be on the pace, as he had not been to Eypynt since before Covid. The event was divided into batches of two stages, allowing crews to push their limits before regrouping at the service area, where all the Minis serviced together.

Despite minor setbacks, such as Harvey Steven's noisy wheel bearing, the anticipation continued to build as Clive and Anton blazed through the first stage, 12 seconds faster than the second-place team of Andrew and Kevin, with the rest of the crews close behind.

Unpredictable Twists and Triumphs Unleash Excitement at the Mini Rally

With a short road section, it was on to the second stage where Clive faced a momentary setback as the intercom battery failed. Undeterred, he pushed forward, matching Andrew's remarkable speed and setting a joint fastest stage time. The other crews continued in hot pursuit.

Ken Price, unfortunately, found himself caught in one of the ditches that dotted the course, damaging the front of his Mini. Regrettably, he decided to withdraw from the race, although they managed to get out with a stage maximum.

Back into service, Andrew had the gear leaver becoming difficult to select 3rd and discovered the mounting was pulling through the body.

Harvey's setback proved to be more severe than anticipated, as his supposedly noisy wheel bearing revealed a chipped tooth on the crown wheel, forcing him to retire from the competition. Nevertheless, undeterred by these trials, Clive powered through the following two stages, skillfully extending his lead.

However, the fourth stage came to an abrupt stop due to a major accident involving car number 1, halting the action. Back at the service area, participants exchanged tales of their cars' performances, before quickly returning to the stages.

Unfortunately, Eric's car suffered from frustrating electrical issues, grinding to a halt just past the flying finish on the sixth stage. Despite frantic efforts they could not get it started. Andrew's Mini began to overheat towards the end of the same stage, parking close to Eric with the crank pulley loose.

Within a short span of time, four Mini contenders were forced to retire from the race, leaving the remaining drivers determined to reach the finish line. With Andrew and Kevin out of the running, Clive decided to ease off the throttle, aiming to secure his position. To his surprise, he found himself clocking in three seconds faster than his previous run through the stage, in the process extended his lead.

When the exhilarating race finally concluded, Clive emerged as the victor, clinching the first-place trophy in the fiercely contested Mini Cup, first in class,  29th overall.

The prize draws were held at the finish:

Exol Oil prize - won by Andy Jarman

Snap-On prize kindly donated by Andrew (from Snap-On) - won by Eric Davies

Alan Brown from Questmead came to watch how their brake products performed. He awarded a set of brake pads for best improvement in seeding to Andy Jarman

Congratulations Clive & Anton on 1st place finish!

This week on the blog we’re approaching the subject of ensuring your Mini is watertight, that means no leaks! Although yes, we are technically in Spring,  let’s not forget, in the UK sunshine is never guaranteed & rain is never far away… Ensuring that your Mini is watertight will help prevent rust/rot by simply spending a short while checking the Mini seals every now & again.

First step in checking that your Mini is watertight, is to walk around the Mini – carrying out a visual inspection of the all the Mini seals, including window seals, the door glass seals and door seals. You should also be checking the strap seals, bonnet and boot seals, front and rear lamp seals.

What you are looking for are cuts, cracks or shrinkage, if you find any of these problems you will need to replace the relevant Mini seals as soon as possible.

If you are already experiencing water ingress, then you need to know where it is coming from… It is not always obvious, even when you find a spot that is wet. The most common way to find a water leak is to sit in your Mini with all windows and doors firmly closed, with an assistant on the outside with a hose pipe spraying water gently over the Mini, around the window and door seals, rear light clusters, boot lid and bonnet – don’t use a high pressure jet as this will force water through an otherwise water tight seal. But this should make it apparent to you if you have any areas that are leaking.

Our full range of seals can be found right here on our website, but if you’re unsure of what you need or if you need any advice at all on your Mini or parts, please don’t hesitate to contact our friendly & knowledgable Sales Team who will be happy to help – we can be reached via email sales@minisport.com or on the phone 01282 778731.

This week on the blog we’re approaching the subject of ensuring your Mini is watertight, that means no leaks! Although yes, we are technically in Spring,  let’s not forget, in the UK sunshine is never guaranteed & rain is never far away… Ensuring that your Mini is watertight will help prevent rust/rot by simply spending […]

The next blog in our ‘Home Servicing’ series -"Detailing your Mini"  can be undertaken by ANYONE, no matter your level of Mini expertise!

Whether you're hitting the road or attending a Mini event, make sure your beloved little car is turning heads by giving it the TLC it deserves. Grab a detailing kit, roll up your sleeves, and let your Mini shine like never before.

We know everyone has their own special ways to keep their Mini looking fabulous, but we wanted to share our suggestion with you:

What you will need:

First things first, rinse your Mini from top to bottom with water, this is to get rid of any debris that might be on there.

Moving on, we would advise that you start with the dirtiest part of your Mini – the wheels! They will need a good pre-soak with the Cooper Mini Wheel Cleaner. You can then go in with a brush on the difficult to reach places, using a separate washcloth or mitt. We strongly advise that you use a different mitt & bucket here, to what you will be using on the rest of your Mini!

Next, mix the Cooper Mini Shampoo with water 2-3 caps to a bucket – warm water is best to help loosen anything stuck on like dew, bugs or bird droppings etc then generously apply the mixture all over your Mini, starting at the top and working your way down in small sections. Rinse your cloth or mitt in the water regularly before adding new mixture to the Mini – you don’t want to contaminate your clean shampoo concoction with dirty water! This process will help lift any dead bugs and obstinate muck that might be lurking on there. Once you’re satisfied that your Mini is clean of grime, it’s time to rinse again – get rid of all that shampoo.

Once your Mini is rinsed off and shampoo free, it’s time to dry! Again we would advise that you begin at the top of your Mini and work your way down using a chamois. You need to complete this step as quickly as possible… You don’t want to be left with streaks or spots!

Now your Mini is dry, it’s time to get stuck in with polishing! There are two options for polishing – by hand or with a machine. The finish with a machine will be a better polish than by hand, but not everyone wil

l have a machine. We would only recommend using the machine if you’ve had practice and know what you’re doing, you don’t want to ruin your paint. We’ll talk you through hand polishing, the results are still good and it also offers you greater control.

Apply Cooper Mini Polish to a soft cloth and rub it in to your Mini in a circular motion. Working slowly, polish one section at a time using plenty of polish – don’t let your cloth dry out. Carrying on with your circular motions until the polish has vanished completely – you don’t want this to dry on your Mini. We’d also advise against polishing your Mini in direct sunlight. If you drop your cloth at any point in the polishing process – do not continue using it! Replace your cloth to avoid embedding debris in to your Mini’s paint!

Following on from polishing your Mini, it’s time to wax. We’d recommend you don’t do this in high temperatures to avoid the wax drying as soon as you apply it to your Mini – however in very cold weather, wax becomes difficult to manoeuvre around your Mini! Waxing in your garage is the ideal location to avoid the issues caused by differing temperatures. Using a foam applicator, or damp sponge, use small circular motions to apply the Cooper Mini Car Wax to your Mini. Again it’s best to work in sections when waxing, don’t use too much wax – this can be a nightmare to get off your Mini. Leave the wax on your Mini for a few minutes before wiping the wax away. A handy trick to see if the wax is ready to come off or not is to wipe your finger on a small section – does it smear? If so, the wax needs to stay on a little longer, but if it comes off clear then you can wipe the wax off using a clean microfiber cloth.

Finally, it’s time to get those tyres & trim gleaming! Using the Cooper Mini Tyre & Trim on a soft cloth, work in small circular motions and wipe away the excess!

Now you’ve done the whole Mini… It might also be worth giving your glass the once over, after all – mucky fingerprints just won’t do!

Et voilà! Your Mini should now be gleaming and show ready.
